Russell’s Bicycle Shed Rides for Hendo’s

As the Organisers of the Cycle City Active City conference prepare for the event to open at Sheffield City Hall tomorrow, Russell Cutts, owner of Russell’s Bicycle Shed, Sheffield has this morning taken to the streets on one of his e-cargo bikes to make a collection from a very special Sheffield location and deliver to the conference venue. 
Russell has cycled the short trip to the Henderson’s Relish factory to collect some of Sheffield’s famous spicy table sauce to gift to the event speakers and VIP’s.  The organisers requested ‘a little bit of Sheffield for guests to take away. And what could be better than a dose of Henderson’s Relish ‘Strong and Northern’.
 
The conference is about enabling communities, individuals, and businesses to make healthy travel choices, and this was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate just how easy this is by using a local e-cargo bike company to make this journey.
 
Russell is also speaking at the conference to share how he set up his diesel-free human-powered delivery service enabling businesses and organisations who want to save money to do so while helping improve air quality, reduce congestion, and increase health and wellbeing in Sheffield.

Russell Cutts, Russell’s Bicycle Shed:“If you have a modern e-cargo bike available, It makes no sense for a business to deliver a few boxes across the city in an expensive and polluting diesel vehicle that will likely take far longer to get through the traffic jams and park,” said Russell Cutts. 

“So I’m really pleased to be talking to people from around the UK at the Cycle City Active City conference about how e-cargo bike deliveries and local cycle hubs, like we’ll soon have in Sheffield, are essential for local low carbon economies to thrive. And seasoning that message by delivering Sheffield’s essential lunch companion is a great idea, so thanks to Hendo’s for their support for active travel in the Outdoor City!”

“We want to see more walking and cycling in Sheffield, because it’s good for the city, for all sorts of reasons.  Getting out and about on foot or on your bike makes people happier and healthier, and it’s good for business too because fewer car trips means less congestion and less pollution.”

He added: “And it’s not just about cutting down on car commuting: for example, I usually drive to work as it’s a bit far to cycle, but I walk to the local shops instead of driving there, and if I’m going to the gym or to play football with my mates, I often cycle there instead of drive, as it helps with my training.” (Seb is preparing to run a marathon for the Christie Cancer Research charity later this year, after they’d helped him recover after a cancer diagnosis several years ago).

“And in a hilly city like Sheffield, walking, running or cycling for journeys is good for calorie control too. What we say is, why spend money on costly stuff like petrol or diesel when you can fuel your transport with great local food instead? That’s why we think Cycle City Active City will like our mini Hendo’s bottles: they are popular with runners, walkers and cyclists because they can carry them on their trips ready for their lunchtime refuel. Instead of queueing at the petrol station, they can fill up on a nice pie lubricated by a splash of Hendo’s rather than spend a fortune on petrol and motor oil.” 

The conference will take place on 5 and 6 July at City Hall and Barkers Pool, and will see more than 800 active travel professionals welcomed to Sheffield by Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Oliver Coppard, Mayor, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
There will be cycling and walking tours taking place around the city, including visits to Hillsborough Park and Kelham Island, to try out its walking and cycling infrastructure and amenities.

Last year, the Government announced plans to make England a great walking and cycling nation, and will provide around £2 billion to help local authorities across England to make the vision a reality.
