In response to rising energy costs, Innovation in Action identified ten small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Yorkshire facing significant energy use and cost challenges. This collaborative project engaged solution provider FourJaw, which introduced a plug-and-play machine monitoring platform designed to help businesses better understand and manage their energy consumption.
Energy represents a substantial portion of manufacturing revenues, averaging around 4%, but in sectors such as food, it can soar to 15%. With energy prices having surged by 50% between 2021 and 2022—and expected to remain elevated—many businesses are seeking innovative ways to mitigate these costs. Traditionally, companies have tackled such challenges with a mix of determination, grants, and consultancy support. However, the Innovation In Action business network presents a new model that fosters collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and support among local businesses.
The energy challenge provided participating SMEs with a range of valuable resources. They received coordinated project support and access to peer mentorship aimed at reducing energy bills. FourJaw supplied energy and productivity monitoring equipment for five machines over three months, complemented by customer success tech support. The project also offered data interpretation and personalised digital roadmaps through Made Smarter, enabling businesses to pinpoint effective strategies for energy efficiency.
Moreover, the initiative facilitated collaborative discussions among participants, allowing them to co-design solutions, share best practices, and report on practical improvements in productivity and energy usage. This collective approach not only promotes innovation but also helps businesses identify new opportunities for growth and sustainability.
By breaking down barriers and demonstrating the benefits of adopting innovative practices, this initiative is setting a precedent for future collaborations among SMEs in South Yorkshire. As businesses navigate the complexities of rising energy costs, the power of partnership and shared learning will be key to unlocking new pathways to success.
