Sheffield’s growing reputation as an exciting UK city break destination has recently been highlighted on a prime German Breakfast show programme.

Airing on ZDF’s Volle Kanne on Friday 16 August, a travel feature on the city was presented by reporter Marina Wenk, who visited Sheffield in the last weekend of July to film on location.

The 13-minute piece was broadcast in two segments and took German viewers on a whistle-stop tour or Sheffield’s key attractions, vibrant places and green spaces across the city.

Sheffield’s AR Art Trail, Look Up, was featured along with the Home of Football walking tour app. Key cultural locations such as Kelham Island Museum and Sheffield Theatres also featured, while the city’s strong independent scene was showcased with a tour of food hall Cambridge Street Collective, Heist Brewery, Sheffield Vegan Market on The Moor and Dorothy Pax at Victoria Quays.

The city’s inner city green spaces were a key feature of the piece too, showing scenic views of the Peace Gardens, Sheffield Winter Garden and Pound’s Park, along with the cinematic views at Parkwood Springs.

Sheffield’s close proximity to Peak District National Park was also highlighted, along with the opportunity for outdoor adventure pursuits, including a bus trip to Burbage Valley for some abseiling before the presenter finished with some caving.

Germany’s equivalent to the likes of This Morning in the UK, ZDF Volle Kanne is a well-established morning programme which is broadcast live each week, Monday to Friday 9:05am - 10:30am, to an average audience of 750,000 on channel ZDF.

Marketing Sheffield worked closely with the programme’s production team to support the filming of the travel feature. The two organisations originally connected in 2019 when Marketing Sheffield exhibited the city at ITB Berlin, one of Europe's largest travel industry events, as a destination for City Breaks.

The project, supported by a grant from Visit England's Discover England Fund, was a turning point in establishing Sheffield with German media and travel audiences.

The Sheffield travel feature is still available to watch online via the ZDF Volle Kanne website here with the city segments showing at 50.40 and 1.06.34.
