Then and Now - A Joe Scarborough Exhibition

28 Jul 2025 - 19 Sep 2025

Then and Now is an art exhibition celebrating Joe’s original paintings from the 1960s to present day, from his first ventures into oil painting with maritime subjects to his most recent collections of smaller works in oil and watercolours.

Featuring original oil and watercolour paintings spanning over 60 years of experience, the new exhibition  celebrates a lifetime of work by beloved Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough and will be home to Joe’s final collection of new and old pieces, showcasing his bright and vibrant life embodied in paint.

Joe’s iconic characters and colourful Sheffield scenes make his work instantly recognisable, and depict the busy and bustling atmosphere of his home city. Many of his characters have appeared in multiple pieces over the years, accompanying him on his adventures through the streets of Sheffield and beyond.

“From the 1960s to this year, in oil and watercolour, I’ve always tried to show the world as it appears to me,” said Joe.

Born in Sheffield in 1938, Joe Scarborough is an artist most famous for bringing to life the everyday scenes of South Yorkshire, painting humorous depictions of Sheffield life. Originally hailing from Pitsmoor, an area to the North of Sheffield City Centre, Joe still lives in his hometown to this day on his much loved narrowboat.
