Did you know a whopping 61% of Sheffield is green space? As far as we're aware, Oslo is the only city in the world with a higher percentage than this.

Our amazing outdoors includes 800 managed green spaces across 4,000 hectares, plus we're the only 'major' UK city with a national park within its boundary, as one third of Sheffield actually sits inside the Peak District National Park.

So, yes, we're pretty green and leafy, despite our 'Steel City' moniker of yesteryear...

The UK's most sustainable city

We are delighted that NatWest's study in 2021 gave us this title.

A Greenground Map of Sheffield

Sheffield actually has more than 800 managed green spaces across 4,000 hectares within the city boundary. With so much on offer, we wanted to create something to help demonstrate how accessible greenspaces are in The Outdoor City and so we commissioned a ‘Greenground Map’ from designer Helen Ilus.

We are all Outdoor Cityzens

Living in Sheffield, and being surrounded by this much nature, means we have a duty to look after it - for ourselves, and those who want to visit here to experience it for themselves too.

Biodiversity, the climate and nature crises, and health and wellbeing are important aspects of life to consider. We want to help everyone make Sheffield more sustainable, eco-conscious and biodiverse.
