Anatomy at Sheffield: from scalpel to virtual dissection and beyond

10 Feb 2025 - 15 Jun 2025

Human Anatomy is the study of structures like muscles, vessels, nerves and bones to understand how our bodies function, while the study of anatomy is at the core of understanding what makes us human.

This special exhibition at the University of Sheffield examines the teaching of anatomy and how it has evolved considerably through the ages. In particular, the exhibition will also focus on how the subject has been studied right here in Sheffield.

The exhibition begins with an investigation of the new technologies which are dramatically changing the way that anatomy is being taught at the University of Sheffield.

It looks back to when anatomy teaching was often problematic and sometimes unpopular, and to 1904 when the subject was established at the University.

Finally, the exhibition offers the opportunity to see centuries-old anatomy textbooks from our Rare Books Collection which show the pioneering science of the early anatomists and the technical brilliance of their illustrators and printers
