A Short History of Professional Theatre in Sheffield

A city centre walk, visiting the sites of Sheffield's theatrical history, including surviving venues, as well as the buildings of former theatres and concert halls. 

Hear tales from the days of travelling players to current theatre practices via Georgian, Victorian, Repertory and Commercial Touring Theatre. 

The walk will cover the rivalry between art and religion, the decline and fall of different styles of theatre and the struggle against fire, the blitz, town planners and rival forms of entertainment.

Following the publication of “Stirring Up Sheffield” by Colin George & Ted George, this tour has been updated to include the struggles of opening the Crucible Theatre in 1971.
