History of Ecclesall Woods walk

A thorough exploration of Sheffield's most popular green space in the company of local experts.

Starting from Beauchief Gardens, this circular walk will take you on a tour, where you'll see the visible remains of woodland activities from early stone markings, coppicing, charcoal production and white coal Q pits, mining for coal and ganister to timber plantings and present-day ponds ‘slowing the flow’

Bring food and drink or purchase refreshments from at the “The Woodland Coffee Stop” outdoor cafe at the Discovery Centre

  • Start: the entrance to Ecclesall Woods on Abbeydale Road opposite Beauchief Gardens SK 324 817
  • Finish: at start
  • Parking: free parking on both sides of Abbeydale Road by the Gardens entrance. If you wish to park at the J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre off Abbey Lane (voluntary parking charge £2.70) meet at 10:10 at the Discovery Centre to walk down to the start.
  • The walk will be returning via the Discovery Centre
  • Public transport : 218 from Sheffield Interchange at 10:10. 97 from AG123 Arundel Gate at 10:08
  • Terrain: mainly good paths but with a few fairly steep uneven sections and steps
  • Grade: moderate
