Record Summer in Sheffield

It’s been a successful summer in Sheffield as we’ve hosted a number of high-profile events (the Women’s Euros being a particular highlight) and some of hotels and venues having record breaking months.  Conferences have played no small part in this and the team at Conference Sheffield have had one of our busiest and most successful summers to date.  Here are a few of our highlights showing why Sheffield really does make for a smart event move.

The two-day Cycle City Active City event at Sheffield City Hall and Barkers Pool, saw more than 800 active travel professionals come to Sheffield to share best practice on how to make England a great walking and cycling nation.  VIPs to the event enjoyed a private reception at one of the city’s newest venues- The Furnace.  Rod Fletcher, MD Landor LINKS said, ‘The Furnace not only offered a fantastic location to show off the city and its regeneration but the food was fabulous, we received attentive service and great value. The private set-up on The Terrace also impressed’.

Back in June, Sumo Digital brought together their 11 studios and over 700 employees from across the globe to share knowledge, meet peers, and build networks – here in their hometown of Sheffield! SDC22 was their inaugural, flagship conference bringing together industry veterans, their expertise, and Sumo people in one place.

Delegates enjoyed a packed 2 days at The Diamond, University of Sheffield, making use of their first-class tech provision, and in the evening, they relaxed at Kommune (one of Sheffield’s coolest foodhalls) with food, drink, and access into the National Video Game Museum next door for a touch of retro gaming.

In July, the Nutrition Society Summer Conference brought over 200 educators to the city to share new research, insight, and provide a platform to network once again. Known for its expertise in this area via our two universities the facilities at Sheffield Hallam University and Cutlers Hall played the perfect hosts. It was an action-packed programme for delegates with an optional city run (expertly coordinated by Accelerate Running) and the opportunity to complete a stretch and relax class with Hallam Fitness.  Chefs at Sheffield Hallam demonstrated the event theme of sustainability perfectly preparing canapes for the conference drinks reception using food waste which was destined for landfill (thanks to the local team at Food Works)

Sheffield Ambassador Jenny Paxman said “Hosting the prestigious Nutrition Society Summer Conference here in Sheffield was a real privilege.  It’s 21 years since this particular event was held in The Steel City and what made the 2022 conference particularly special was the collaborative approach we embraced from the outset.  The teams from Sheffield Hallam University, The University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council worked together throughout, and delegates were effusive in their praise of everything from the main venue here at SHU, to the social activities and of course the scientific programme.  We welcomed speakers from all over the world who came to present perspectives on the core theme ‘Food and Nutrition: pathways to a sustainable future’.  It was wonderful to reconnect with colleagues and collaborators and delegates left singing Sheffield’s praises.”
